Introduction

Faber Castell makes perhaps the finest colored pencils in the market. Watercolor pencils, made with a simple watercolor paint core are hard to distinguish, yet in true Faber Castell fashion, their Albrecht Durer line surpasses even premium watercolors.

Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils are professional grade tools made for artists. With the option of being used wet or dry, and a range of 120 different colors, these watercolor pencils have an expansive color spectrum. Brilliant when applied dry, they take on a glossy finish when wet and their sturdy, thin core allows for precise detailing.

Available in sets of 12, 24, 36 (this is a gift set), 60, their full pack of 120, and individually, these watercolors are quite affordable despite their relatively high price range.

All Faber Castell pencils are encased in California cedar wood and secured to the barrel with SV bonding. With specialized mediums such as oil, pastel, or watercolor paint, this step allows otherwise brittle leads to withstand breakage.

What They’re Good For

Albrecht Durer watercolors are different from traditional watercolor paint in that they are very lightfast. All Faber Castells are known for their resistance to fading, even their watercolor line.

I said earlier that these watercolors distinguish themselves from other brands and here’s how they do it: Watercolor pencils are notorious for their inability to cover large areas, which is why most of them are used to sharpen edges and create defined borders. The Albrecht Durer line however require very little pressure and adding water facilitates spreading without diluting the color to a fading point.

While most watercolor pencils will produce a *watercolor* finish, these pencils will produce a smooth, matte finish with a vibrant coverage very unlike what you would expect- in a good way!

Ratings Breakdown

Faber Castell’s line of watercolor pencils are specifically and thoughtfully designed for artistic use. With their smooth application and creamy texture, they far surpass a traditional watercolor’s performance.

Lightfastness 4/5

All Faber Castell pencils have high lightfastness ratings, one of the many features that make them the best in the industry. While watercolor can’t reach the same level of lightfastness than other mediums, this brand makes a very lightfast product, resistant to fading and maintaining its luster over time.

Sturdiness/ Durability 5/5

Faber Castells are encased in a sturdy California cedar wood as well as bound with SV bonding to ensure the integrity of fragile leads. The company’s binding process makes Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils especially sturdy and this line is made with a 3.8 mm lead that is shatter-proof. Additionally, since the color spreads without much pressure and covers large areas easily, the actual substance is also long-lasting.

Binder/ Quality 5/5

Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils are made with a water-soluble watercolor paint lead. Each core is made with pure ground color pigment that makes for an incredibly smooth finish. While this is a water-soluble paint, the substance is more similar to a creamier material, leaving a matte finish with full coverage.

Color Intensity 5/5

These watercolor pencils are available in 120 different colors, each with its own color range. The watercolors are very easy to manipulate, allowing for dynamic utility and gorgeous results.

Value 4/5

Faber Castell colored pencils are the best and the best is expensive. The Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils are absolutely going to be some of the most (if not the) expensive watercolors you’ve ever used. That being said, their various count sets makes them relatively affordable- and you can always buy one to try it out and then invest in a bigger pack- because believe me, you’ll want to!

Final Verdict

Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils are the most sophisticated water-soluble tool you’ll ever use. With their great versatility and utility in blending, shading, and layering, you’ll find their dynamic use a very satisfying experience.
